Large-format 3D printer kit for high-capacity production

The Modix3D 120X V4 3D Printer Kit is a large-format Generation 4 printer designed for printing big parts or multiple parts in a single job. This version combines a freshly updated machine design with enclosure improvements, automated calibration features, faster motion capability, and upgraded mechanical components.

The Generation 4 redesign also introduces a modern logo font and a more refined enclosure. Enclosure upgrades include a pneumatic top lid, rear maintenance opening hatch, sturdy door hinges, door and lid sealing strips, and improved internal LED lighting.

Key features and functional upgrades

IDEX dual printing add-on for soluble supports and advanced geometries

The Generation 4 platform supports an IDEX dual printing add-on, where each extruder is independently controlled. While one extruder is active, the second extruder is parked outside the printing area, making advanced models with internal geometries easier to produce when using water-soluble filament.

The IDEX add-on is sold separately for all Generation 4 printers. The add-on includes a secondary printing subsystem with Griffin print head, clog detector, PTFE tube, and spool mount, plus a motion system with a secondary Y-axis motor and required components such as belts and pulleys, metal brackets for both Y axis and print heads, and wires, drag chains, and optical end-stops.

Fully automated calibration across Generation 4

Generation 4 printers now come with the Duex 5 electronic expansion board across the full product line. Previously, this board was provided by default only with BIG-Meter and BIG-180X models.

Using Duex 5 allows a dedicated stepper motor driver for each Z and X-axis motor. As a result, the printer supports a full set of automated calibration routines, including automated bed tilt, bed levelling, gantry alignment, and Z offset calibration.

Higher printing speed with stronger motion components

Generation 4 printers are capable of printing significantly faster than earlier versions. Travel speed reaches up to 350 mm/s, with high-quality printing at 100 mm/s and higher speeds available for draft-quality work.

This increase in speed is enabled by strong NEMA 23 motors on the X-axis instead of NEMA-17 motors. Motion performance is also improved by reducing Y-axis load, as the weight of one motor is now split into two independent motors when using the IDEX setup.

Emergency stop and improved accessibility

All Modix Generation 4 models are equipped with an emergency stop button. The stop button resets the Duet controller and stops printing immediately.

Generation 4 also introduces accessibility improvements on taller models such as the BIG-Meter and BIG-120Z, including a tilt screen mounted on an articulated arm, a frontal secondary power switch for easier access in tight installations, and a large secondary reset button. The tilt screen is particularly convenient during system calibration because it can be rotated for easier viewing while monitoring print head performance.

Stronger Z axis and improved positional accuracy

The Generation 4 Z axis has been improved with stronger NEMA 23 motors and CNC-machined brackets that hold the bed firmly and at a higher level of accuracy. These upgrades support more stable motion and more consistent bed positioning on a large-format machine.

Optical end-stops for repeatability and recovery

All Generation 4 printers now use optical end-stop switches. Optical switches provide higher accuracy and repeatability over time, which is especially important for reliable job recovery after a power outage.

Improved PTFE tube handling

The PTFE tube now rests in a roller guide that helps maintain its most relaxed position. This reduces friction inside the tube and improves filament path management.

Use cases for a 1200 x 600 x 640 mm 3D printer

  • Large prototype production: Print oversized concept models, enclosures, jigs, fixtures, and display components in one piece instead of segmenting them.
  • Complex internal geometry printing: Add the IDEX system and use water-soluble filament to make support-heavy parts easier to finish.
  • Batch manufacturing: Use the wide build area to produce multiple parts in a single run for workshops, print farms, and small-scale production environments.
  • Engineering and iterative development: Automated bed tilt, bed levelling, gantry alignment, and Z offset calibration help reduce setup time between jobs.
  • Long-duration printing: Optical end-stops, emergency stop functionality, and improved enclosure sealing support more controlled and repeatable operation on extended prints.
