Modix3D 180x V4 3D Printer Kit (1800x600x600mm)
Large-format 3D printer kit for very tall and oversized parts
The Modix3D 180x V4 3D Printer Kit is a large-format Generation 4 machine built for printing parts up to 1800 x 600 x 600 mm. First introduced in late 2019 as the BIG-180X, this model combines Modix's modular platform with updated Generation 4 hardware for faster printing, more automated calibration, and improved day-to-day usability.
Similar to the BIG-60, the BIG-180X uses the latest Generation 4 components and follows the same modular approach, making it easier to match the printer configuration to specific production needs and budget requirements.
Generation 4 enclosure and design improvements
The updated Generation 4 design adds practical enclosure improvements intended to make operation, maintenance, and monitoring easier. The platform also features a refreshed design language and updated Modix logo styling.
- Pneumatic top lid for easier access from above
- Rear maintenance opening hatch to simplify servicing
- Sturdy door hinges for improved durability
- Door and lid sealing strips to improve enclosure sealing
- Improved internal LED lighting for better visibility inside the print chamber
IDEX dual printing add-on for soluble supports and advanced geometry
The optional IDEX add-on adds independent dual extrusion, where each extruder is controlled separately. While one extruder is active, the second extruder remains parked outside the printing area, which makes advanced prints with internal geometries easier to produce when using water-soluble filament.
The IDEX package is sold as an add-on for all Generation 4 printers and includes the secondary printing and motion components needed for independent operation.
- Secondary printing subsystem including Griffin print head, clog detector, PTFE, and spool mount
- Secondary motion system with a second Y-axis motor and required belts, pulleys, and related parts
- Metal brackets for both Y axis and print heads
- Wires, drag chains, and optical end-stops
Automated calibration across the Generation 4 platform
Generation 4 printers now include the Duex 5 electronic expansion board across the full product line. Previously, this board was provided by default only with the BIG-Meter and BIG-180X models.
Using Duex 5, each Z and X-axis motor receives a dedicated stepper motor driver. This hardware arrangement enables a full automated calibration set that includes bed tilt, bed levelling, gantry alignment, and Z offset calibration.
Faster large-format 3D printing with stronger motion components
Generation 4 printers are built to print significantly faster than earlier versions. The system supports travel speeds up to 350 mm/s and is described as capable of high-quality printing at 100 mm/s, with higher speeds available for draft-quality output.
This speed increase is supported by stronger NEMA 23 motors on the X-axis in place of NEMA-17 motors. Weight on the Y axis is also reduced by splitting the load of one motor into two independent motors through the IDEX setup.
Emergency stop and accessible controls
All Modix Generation 4 models are equipped with an emergency stop button. Pressing the stop button resets the Duet controller and stops printing immediately.
The original Generation 4 description also notes frontal control improvements for taller models such as the BIG-Meter and BIG-120Z, including a tilt screen, frontal secondary power switch, and large secondary reset button. These features are described as improving accessibility, especially when a printer is installed in a tight corner or between other equipment.
Improved Z-axis accuracy and repeatability
The Generation 4 Z axis uses stronger NEMA 23 motors together with CNC-machined brackets that hold the bed more firmly. This combination is intended to deliver a higher level of accuracy during large-format printing.
Optical end-stops for more reliable positioning
Generation 4 printers upgrade end-stop switches to optical switches. Optical end-stops offer higher accuracy and repeatability over time, which is particularly important for reliable job recovery after a power outage.
Improved PTFE tube routing
The PTFE management system has also been updated in Generation 4. The PTFE tube rests in a roller guide that keeps the tube in a more relaxed position, helping reduce friction inside the tube.
Where the Modix3D 180x V4 fits best
This extra-tall 3D printer kit is suited to applications where printing large parts as a single piece matters more than dividing a model into smaller sections. The 1800 mm Z height is especially useful for full-height prototypes, display structures, tooling, fixtures, enclosures, and other oversized fabrication work.
The optional IDEX configuration is particularly relevant for users who need soluble support workflows for complex internal geometry. Automated calibration, optical end-stops, and the improved enclosure make the platform more practical for repeated large-format production, prototyping, and workshop use.
