Large-format 3D printer kit for oversized parts and production-scale builds

The Modix3D Big60 V4 is a large-format 3D printer kit with a 600 x 600 x 660 mm build volume, designed for users who need to produce bigger parts, larger batches, or tall models on a single machine. As Modix's flagship model, the BIG-60 was first introduced in 2017 and is now offered in its fourth-generation design.

The Generation 4 platform combines large build capacity, premium components, and an upgrade-focused design. Modix states that new versions are developed with backward compatibility in mind, so owners of previous versions can benefit from periodical performance improvements over time.

Generation 4 design updates and enclosure improvements

The Generation 4 redesign introduces an updated machine appearance and an improved enclosure configuration. For users working with enclosed printing setups, the revised enclosure adds practical access and usability changes.

  • Pneumatic top lid
  • Rear maintenance opening hatch
  • Sturdy door hinges
  • Door and lid sealing strips
  • Improved internal LED lighting

Optional IDEX dual extrusion for soluble supports and complex geometry

The optional IDEX add-on adds an independent dual extruder system to Generation 4 printers. In an IDEX setup, each extruder is controlled independently, and the inactive extruder remains parked outside the print area while the active tool is printing.

This configuration makes advanced models with internal geometries easier to produce by allowing the use of water-soluble filament for support structures.

What the IDEX add-on includes

  • Secondary printing subsystem: Griffin print head, clog detector, PTFE, and spool mount
  • Motion system: secondary Y-axis motor with the required belts, pulleys, and related components
  • Metal brackets for both Y axis and print heads
  • Wires, drag chains, and optical end-stops

Automated calibration for large-format print consistency

Generation 4 printers now include the Duex 5 electronic expansion board across the product line. Previously, this board was provided by default only with the BIG-Meter and BIG-180X models.

Using the Duex 5 board, each Z and X-axis motor receives a dedicated stepper motor driver. This enables a full set of automated calibration routines across Generation 4 models, including automated bed tilt, bed levelling, gantry alignment, and Z offset calibration.

Higher print speeds with stronger motion hardware

Generation 4 Modix printers are designed to print significantly faster than earlier versions. The system supports travel speeds of up to 350 mm/s, with high-quality printing at 100 mm/s and higher speeds available for draft-quality work.

Speed gains come from the use of strong NEMA 23 motors on the X-axis instead of NEMA-17 motors. Weight on the Y axis has also been reduced because the weight of one motor is now split into two independent motors when using the IDEX setup.

Emergency stop and machine accessibility features

All Modix Generation 4 models are equipped with an emergency stop button. The stop button resets the Duet controller and stops printing immediately.

The original Generation 4 update information also notes additional default accessibility features for the taller BIG-Meter and BIG-120Z models: a tilt screen mounted on an articulated arm, a frontal secondary power switch, and a large secondary reset button. These features are described as improvements for easier access in tight spaces and during calibration work.

Improved Z-axis stability and repeatability

The Generation 4 Z axis uses stronger NEMA 23 motors together with CNC-machined brackets that hold the bed more firmly and at a higher level of accuracy. For large-format printing, this mechanical improvement supports more stable bed movement over the full build height.

Optical end-stops for accuracy and recovery consistency

Generation 4 printers upgrade the end-stop switches to optical switches. Optical end-stops offer higher accuracy and repeatability over time, which is especially important for job recovery after a power outage.

Improved PTFE tube routing

The PTFE tube management system has also been updated in Generation 4. The PTFE tube rests in a roller guide that keeps the tube in a more relaxed position, helping reduce internal friction.

Where the Modix3D Big60 V4 fits best

This large-format 3D printer is suited to makers, engineers, workshops, and businesses that need to print oversized prototypes, full-scale design concepts, large jigs and fixtures, or parts that would otherwise need to be split into multiple sections. The optional IDEX system is particularly useful for users looking for a large-format 3D printer with dual extrusion for soluble supports and more complex internal features.

The self-assembly format also suits users who want a configurable platform with optional enclosure and upgrade paths, while the Generation 4 automation and motion-system updates target more consistent setup and faster throughput on large prints.
