Reinforced Filament

Reinforced 3D printing filaments combine a thermoplastic base material with reinforcing fibres or additives to improve specific mechanical and dimensional properties. Carbon fibre (CF) and glass fibre (GF) are among the most common reinforcements, with each offering different performance characteristics for demanding 3D printing applications.

Reinforced filament can provide greater stiffness, strength, dimensional stability, heat resistance, and resistance to deformation compared with the unfilled version of the same base polymer.

Carbon Fibre Reinforced Filament

Carbon fibre reinforcement is commonly used when high stiffness, low weight, and dimensional stability are important. CF-filled materials can be useful for structural components, fixtures, tooling, functional prototypes, and other applications where rigidity and reduced warping are priorities.

Glass Fibre Reinforced Filament

Glass fibre reinforcement can increase stiffness, strength, dimensional stability, and temperature resistance while providing an alternative to carbon fibre for applications where maximum rigidity or weight reduction is not the primary requirement.

Common Applications

  • Functional engineering components

  • Structural parts

  • Prototypes and production parts

  • Manufacturing fixtures and tooling

  • Jigs and brackets

  • Automotive components

  • Industrial equipment

  • Dimensional-stability-critical parts

  • High-temperature applications

  • Lightweight structural components

Reinforcement does not automatically make every material suitable for every application. The performance of a reinforced filament depends on both the base polymer and the type, concentration, and form of reinforcement used. A carbon-fibre-reinforced nylon, for example, will behave differently from a glass-fibre-reinforced PEEK.

Many reinforced materials are also abrasive and may require a hardened or wear-resistant nozzle and appropriate extrusion hardware. Some materials also benefit from an enclosed or heated build chamber and controlled filament drying.

3D Printing Canada offers carbon fibre, glass fibre, and other reinforced filaments for engineering, manufacturing, prototyping, tooling, and demanding functional applications.
